Mike Reeb w/ Jeremy Messersmith

Fathers, hide your daughters because two of the Midwest's most talented indie-heart throbs are playing tomorrow night (Thursday November 16) at The Joshua House, on 224 Russel Street in West Lafayette.

I believe this is Jeremy Messersmith's second time through Lafayette, last time I saw him, was also in Joshua House and he absolutely blew me away. He uses looping pedals and a super kawaii baby casio to incorporate lo-fi electronic beats and bleeps into his music, all which complement his voice and bold guitar playing very well. Look out for some extra special covers during the night (I'm banking on a Sigur Ros cover) as well as some material from his new album.

Mike Reeb

As for Mike Reeb, a man who wears the same cut of denim as myself, expect bold passionate songs teeming with small town charm, love, faith and life experiences. If you didn't catch him during the summer as the resident crooner at Crawdaddies, or at at the release show for his new record. "Without the City Lights"at Downtown Records, then shame on you and your mother. Come out and see him play tomorrow!

Yo, thugs!

David Rothbart, one of the editors of Found Magazine is coming to Campus. The magazine and books comprise of notes, pictures, stories or any personal artefacts that are discarded/lost, then found by people who send them in to be published!

I found the note above here, at the website! It was sent all the way from West La La! (So, If anyone went to the party, tell me how it went, I bet it was thug-sweet!")

He'll be here Tuesday, Oct 24, at the Wells Center, 638 North St., Lafayette. The talk starts at 7:30 p.m.

OR....

You could go to a rocking concert featuring local electro all-starts AZ, Drumkit and one of Michael Gondry's favorite bands "The Willowz" ! The show's tonight at DT records at 8pm. I'll be there late just 'cos I got bible study. I'll put up trax after the show so you can kick yourself for not going.

But trust me, it will be good!

The very reason the Camera was invented

Today's the MADE student photography contest. It runs today (Monday, 23rd October) and tomorrow from 10am-8pm in Room 118 on the union.

The winner is determined by popular vote and can win stuff (gift certificates and perhaps even Mr Hasselhoff's book of erotic photography).

So, what are you waiting for, go out and check out the local talent. (Speaking of local talent: check out Dave E.'s pics.)

And if you can't stand boring landscape's and dodgy close up's on inanimate audience, at least go for my nude self portraits.

Sorry I've been lazy recently, here's something "Gold and Black" to make up for last weekend's trouncing at the hands of Wisconsin.

Maybe if our school song wasn't "Hail Hail to Old Purdue" and was "Jan Pehechaan Ho", we would win more games.

DLP Annual Drag Show

Delta Lamba Phi will be having their 7th annual Drag Show this Saturday. I went last year and it was an absolute blast. The performers were really professional, witty and uh...did I mention SEXY! It's one of the biggest rainbow events on this campus and once a year Purdue loses its conservative front, throws on that red sequin gown that's been gathering dust in the closet, puts on some bad shoes and gets to sing Cher covers to its hearts content!

Point of advice:

Take plenty of dollar bills, sometimes it's the only way you can distract the performers...

Why should you go?

If you want to earn points for diversikey
If you've never seen a 200 pound man in, the aforementioned, "bad shoes".
If you want to take your girlfriend on a date with little chance of her leaving with someone else
If you want to confuse the heck out of your grandma
If you want extra credit for your gender and sexuality class

Seriously, it's one of the most fun nights at Purdue all year and is a completely different experience for everyone regardless of their sexual orientation. Look out for me, I'll be the guy sporting one of these naughty things shaking it on stage with the performers!

I stand before you naked

This Weekend, there will be an undergraduate performance of the Joyce Carol Oates play, "I Stand Before You Naked". Oates' play is a collection of monologues exploring the lives of 10 contemporary women as they deal with their individual struggles. The characters cover a spectrum of ages, backgrounds and experiences, all united by their discontent of their current situations and their desires to be understood, respected and loved.

The play is very provocative and deals with issues such as sexuality, violence, class and religion. The cast is almost entirely composed of women (except two men) and is being directed by two female students. The play reflects the increasing diversity of the theatre department, which just finished a production of, African-American playwright August Wilson's work Seven Guitars.

Why should you see it?

Because it's a well played, provocative, student directed play (and because my good friend Kevin is in it!)

"I Stand Before You Naked" will take place this Friday, October 13th at 7.30 and on Saturday, October 14th at 3:00 pm & 7:30 pm at the Carole and Gordon Mallett Theatre in the Visual and Performing Arts building. There is no cover charge for the play.

Folk Night at Cafe Royale

Ian Alexy, Mary Bue and Josh Garrels, three of the finest folk musicians in the Midwest stopped by Cafe Royale last weekend.

Ian Alexy describes himself a singer-songwriter but I don't think the label really does him justice. His songs belie his diverse influences and you can hear folk, jazz and blues resonating through his songwriting. His debut CD "Rootedness" had more folksy, bluegrass influences while his new project "Broken Billy" is much more ambitious, with more complex melodies and a great slow country feel.

My favorite songs he played during the night were:

"Blame Me" (from his new project, Broken Billy which features Mary Bue on vocals)

"Love is Letting Go" (off his debut album rootedness)

Mary Bue is from Minnesota and has built up quite the reputation as a talented folk musician, performer and songwriter. Her songs are multifaceted, sometimes playful, sometimes mournful and always honest. It is like stealing a peek into someone else’s journal, except the words are accompanied by beautiful piano melodies. One thing struck me in particular, I noticed, that despite the boisterous coffee house surroundings, the room stayed quiet during most of her set. It is rather difficult to hold a conversation when someone seems to be playing the story of your life. Such are the songs of Mary Bue.

My favourite songs she played were:

"Found Myself Sad"
"Red Dirt Trails"
"Love"

Josh Garrels took the stage last and I absolutely loved him. His signature beats, folksy guitars, abstract hip-hop and insightful lyrics are unlike anything I've ever heard. I listened to “Joyful Boy”, and I can hear strains of gospel, folk, soul, hip-hop and spoken word united in a way that sounds unforced.

Check out:

"Joyful Boy" (Pure Brilliance)
"Roll on John"
"Stomp Your Feet" (Sweet Bongos)
